How to install eJabberd XAMPP Server Ubuntu

Before we learn how to install eJabberd XMPP Server on Ubuntu, Let’s understand what eJabberd is.

What is eJabberd?

eJabberd is a scalable and extensible XMPP server which is written mainly in the Erlang Programming language. It is known to be used for providing an XMPP instant messaging service, as a meeting chat room service or as middleware for other software. It can communicate with other XMPP servers and with non-XMPP instant messaging networks as well, using a special type of XMPP component called transport or gateway.

eJabberd Can be run on the various operating system like Ubuntu, Mac OS, OpenSolaris NetBSD, and FreeBSD. It provides support for additional capabilities like saving offline messages.

Install eJabberd XMPP Server on Ubuntu

Step 1: Update repository by running this command.

Step 2: Run this command to Install eJabberd XMPP Server

Step 3: Register an Admin User

Keep the password which you want for an admin user.

Step 4: Give Admin Privileges

To give admin privileges edit ejabberd.cfg file using nano command. Run this command to edit ejabberd.cfg.

Modify following lines
%% Admin user
{acl, admin, {user,”admin”,”localhost”}}.

%% Hostname
{hosts, [“localhost”]}.

Step 5: Restart eJabberd

Step 6: Access eJabberd Web Admin interface

You can navigate to your eJabberd Web Admin interface on droplet’s IP address port 5280

Input admin username and password and navigate to Virtual Hosts -> localhost -> Users to add users.

Step 7: Install XMPP Client on system

To install XMPP Client on the system, run this command.

Now start Gajim and login to Gajim on both the system with two different user accounts.

Add another contact from Actions -> Add Contact menu options. It will send a request to the remote user. A remote user can approve or reject it. If remove user will approve it then it will appear in your chat list and you can start chatting 🙂

We installed eJabberd XMPP Server on Unbuntu Successfully.
